Songoftheday 10/19/13 - You can break away or you can stay, you choose your life you're free to fly...

Laura Branigan - "The Lucky One"
from the album Self-Control (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #20 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8

Today's Song of the Day is by Laura Branigan, whose third album had already scored her her third top-10 pop single with the title track "Self Control". She followed up that hit with another driving epic song that showed off her vocal power and range, "The Lucky One". Written by Bruce Roberts (who is good with that type of song) and produced by Jack White (no, not the White Stripes guy), the song came with another storyline video that made MTV fun (and cheesy) to watch in the mid-80's...

"The Lucky One" would reach the American pop and adult-contemporary top-20 in September of 1984; it would be Laura's last to ready that region of the chart. Also, the dance remix would scale to #10 as well. Internationally, while the single was a top-40 hit in France and Germany, it would fail to clear that bar in the UK, Canada, and Australia.

...and here's Laura on Solid Gold (gotta have some SG every now and then...)

...and again in 1987...

...and lastly in her 1990 tour...

Finally, here's the extended version that made the top-10 that year...

Up tomorrow: The guitarist from a best-selling California band is craaaaazy.
