Billboard Hot 100 peak: #18 (one week)

Note: this was supposed to be Monday's Song of the Day, but since the ratchet hotel in Ohio I was in had unusable "free" internet, I'll be playing catchup...

Today's Song of the Day comes from the DJ and remixer from New York that helped Madonna get her foot in the pop world door by producing her first single "Holiday" and remixing the other two from her first album, John "Jellybean" Benitez. So in return, the Material Girl (who was dating Benitez at the time) returned the favor by giving him one of her songs, "Sidewalk Talk", to release as a single under his name. Catherine Buchanan handled the "lead vocals", but you cannot deny Madonna's presence on back-up and on the chorus.

"Sidewalk Talk" became Jellybean's first pop hit under his lead artist credit, reaching the top-20 on the Hot 100 in February of 1986. The single also topped the dance club play list, his second after "The Mexican" (an underground classic) in 1984. It also popped onto Billboard's R&B chart, peaking at #51. Internationally, the single was a top-40 hit in the Netherlands and New Zealand, and stopped at the halfway-point (#47) in the UK.
