Pop Sweep: August 9, 2014...


Hey kids, it's time to kick off my five-part "chart sweeps" of the songs making their way on to the various singles charts in Billboard magazine this week. As usual, I'll start off on the "pop" side of things, then later on move on to the new stuff on rock, R&B, country, and dance music...

On the "big" chart, Billboard's Hot 100, which combined tallies from radio airplay from all genres along with sales and internet streaming, Magic!'s "Rude" holds tight at #1 for a third week...

The top debut of the week belongs to one of the hottest singers in country music right now, Jason Aldean, as the first single from his upcoming sixth album, "Burnin' It Down", rockets in at #12. It matches the peak of the first single from his last album, "Take A Little Ride". Jason has had one top-10 hit on the Hot 100, "Dirt Road Anthem", which went to #7 in 2011...

Canadian actor turned rapper Drake comes in at #63 with "0 to 100/The Catch Up". As a lead artist he has made the top-10 here seven times, with his first, "Best I Ever Had" going as high as #2 in 2009...


Another foreign actor who moved into music, South African-born Troye Sivan, who starred in the X-Men: Origins movie as the young Wolverine, debuts at #92 with "Happy Little Pill"...


The last entry on the Hot 100 at #95 is German indie-folk duo Milky Chance with their former international smash "Stolen Dance"...


And now on to the pop radio format charts...

On the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, Magic! climb to #1 with "Rude"...

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran pops in at #34 with "Don't", my "Pop Pick of the Week".  It's the follow-up to his "Sing", which made it to #6 on this format (and drops to #39 this week)...


Aussie boy-band 5 Seconds Of Summer follow up their #19 hit "She Looks So Perfect" with the song at #36, "Amnesia"...


Newcomer Meghan Trainor takes her former "Pop Pick", "All About That Bass", to this radio chart at #37...


Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, "Rude" also reigns for a second week...

Irish rockers the Script arrive at #36 with "Superheroes", the first track from their upcoming fourth album No Sound Without Silence. The went to #1 in this format in 2010 with "Breakeven"...


Singer-songwriter Christina Perri went to #10 on this chart with "Human" earlier this year. Now she's back at #39 with "Burning Gold"...


Colbie Caillat returns at #40 with "Try". It's from her Gypsy Heart (Side A) EP. Her first single "Bubbly" went to #1 here for 13 week in 2007-2008...


Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") chart, John Legend enjoys his ninth week on top with "All Of Me"...

Two EDM-tinged songs make their debut on this format; first up at #26 is Coldplay with their Avicii-assisted "A Sky Full Of Stars". They previously topped this chart in 2009 with "Viva La Vida"...


Scottish DJ, producer and singer Calvin Harris enters at #29 with "Summer". It's his first time on this chart...


The last entry here at #30 are newbies Connecting Stars, an indie-folk duo from South Africa, with "Stuck"...
