Pop Sweep: August 23, 2014...
Hey gang, I'm back to kick off the first of today's "chart sweeps", checking out the songs making the various radio and club charts in Billboard magazine. As usual, I'll start on the pop side of things, and since I was away last week, I'll cover what's been happening for the two frames of charts...
On the "big" chart, Billboard's Hot 100, which combines tallies of radio airplay, sales, and internet streaming (like Spotify and YouTube), Magic! is still at #1 for a fifth week with "Rude"...
Last week the triple-threat of singers Jessie J and Ariana Grande with rapper Nicki Minaj had the highest debut with "Bang Bang" at #6. This week they drop to #9. It already matched Jessie's highest peak with "Domino"...

Nicki has this week's big winner as the Sir Mix-A-Lot-cribbing "Anaconda" arrives at #19. It's her eighth lead-artist single to make the pop top-20 (including "Bang Bang"); "Super Bass" went to #3 in 2011. The single is from her upcoming The Pinkprint album, and succeeds "Pills And Potions" which made it to #24...
The sixth track from Katy Perry's Prism album to make the chart, "This Is How We Do", dropped in at #88 last week and leaps to #66 this time out. The lead-off single "Roar" topped the chart last year, while third release "Dark Horse" did the trick in 2014...
Rap newcomer Bobby Shmurda debuted at #96 with his first, "Hot Boy/Hot Nigga", last week, and now jumps up at #72. It's the track behind the viral video "Shmoney Dance"...
Another "viral" rap song to make the chart is "Wild Life" from Jack & Jack which enters the chart this week at #87...
British/Kosovan singer Rita Ora had a rough week, having been cut from the Teen Choice Awards since her ex Calvin Harris refused to allow performance of his song "I Will Never Let You Down". Nonetheless, the former #1 UK hit finally made the US chart last week at #99 and moves to #90 this time out...
Mr. Worldwide himself Pitbull has been releasing a series of one-off singles recently, with "Timber" topping the Hot 100...he's back at #93 with "Fireball" featuring John Ryan...
Rae Smemmurd, a rap duo from Tupelo Mississippi, made their first appearance on the chart last week at #98 with "No Flex Zone", which now climbs four spots to #94...
Country rocker Eric Church places the fourth track from his The Outsiders album, "Cold One" on the Hot 100 at #96. It follows "Give Me Back My Hometown", which topped the country airplay chart and went to #36 on this list...
While rapper T.I.'s collaboration with Iggy Azalea, "No Mediocre", climbs into the top-40 at #40 this week, another track from his forthcoming Paperwork album, "About The Money" featuring Young Thug cashes in at #99...
Three other songs debuted last week then dropped right off the Hot 100; first was Maroon 5 with "It Was Always You" which came in at #45 last week. Official single "Maps" holds out at #7...
Newbie country duo Maddie & Tae entered at #71 for a week with "Girl In A Country Song"...
Former Disney queen Hilary Duff returned to the chart last week at #79 with "Chasing The Sun". Last decade she had three top-40 hits, with "With Love" reaching #24 in 2007...
and now on to the pop radio format charts...
At the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, Magic! also rules for a third straight week with "Rude", while the aforementioned "Bang Bang" was the highest entry at #19 where it holds this week...
R&B singer Jeremih came in last week at #38 with "Don't Tell 'Em", which jumps to #30 now...
Coldplay's Hot 100 top tenner "A Sky Full Of Stars" moves from its debut at #36 to #31 this week...
This week's top entry at #37 is Katy Perry's "This Is How We Do"...
...while at #38 is "Delirious (Boneless)" from EDM DJ and musician Steve Aoki along with Chris Lake ad Tujamo with a cameo from rapper Kid Ink...
British indie-rock band the 1975 enter at #39 with "Girls", my "Pop Pick of the Week"...
At #40 this week is X Factor vets Fifth Harmony with "Bo$$". Last year they took "Miss Movin' On" to #27 on this list...
Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, "Rude" also reigns for a fourth week...
Sia took her top-10 Hot 100 hit "Chandelier" to this format at #35 last week, and now climbs to #29...
Meghan Trainor's former "pop pick" "All About That Bass" moves from last week's entry at #39 to #31...
Demi Lovato climbs three spots from #40 to #37 with "Really Don't Care" with Cher Lloyd...
This week "Bang Bang" shoots in at #39, while American X Factor winners Alex & Sierra come in at #40 with "Scarecrow"...
Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary (or easy-listening) radio chart, Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" replaces John Legend's "All Of Me" at #1 after the latter's 10-week run...
Christian-pop singer Marie Miller entered the chart last week at #30 with "6' 2", and now is at #28...
This week MKTO has the sole debut at #29 with "Classic"...
