Soul Sweep: January 12, 2013...

It's time to check out the newest songs making the charts this week in Billboard magazine, and this time out it's the R&B radio's latest tracks...

On the R&B/HipHop Airplay chart, Miguel's Latin-soul "Adorn" is at #1 for a 17th week.

Rapper Fat Joe had his biggest hit so far in 2002 with the #3 "What's Luv", but he came close last year by reaching the top-5 on the R&B chart with "Another Round" with Chris Brown. Now his third single from a still-undated upcoming album, "Yellow Tape" is the single new entry at #49. It featured a car-load of cameos, with DJ Khaled, Lil' Wayne, A$AP Rocky and French Montana to give the track a younger tack, but what a married father of three is spinning this misogynist stream of unconsciousness is beyond me. I had higher hopes with the strength of "Another Round", but this sounds like a co-opted Weezy track. Grade: D (NSFW)

Meanwhile, over on the more settled Adult R&B radio format (or "Urban Contemporary"), Miguel also reigns for a ninth week with "Adorn".

The only debut this week is by pastor John P. Kee, who brings his #2 Gospel Songs hit "Life & Favor (You Don't Know My Story)" to the UAC chart at #38. While it's not the floor-burner the best soul gospel can be (i.e. Sounds Of Blackness), it's not meant to be, but rather a restrained show of thanks for their faith's help in turning their lives around. And it builds quite nicely in its six minutes. Grade: B-

That does it for the soul side of the house...I'll be back with the latest on the country charts in 90 minutes.. Groove on!
