6 of the 60s: 1/16/13...

It's time to roll out another half-dozen nuggets from the golden age of rock & roll, and this time I'm back to 1962, the year Jackie Kennedy gave a tour of the White House on television..

Dee Dee Sharp - "Mashed Potato Time"
from the album It's Mashed Potato Time (1962)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2

The "Mashed Potato" dance may have been popularized by James Brown, but it was this Philly singer that struck gold with her novelty hit.

Marcie Blane - "Bobby's Girl"
from the album Bobby's Girl: The Complete Seville Recordings (2004)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3

The Brooklyn singer's career didn't last long enough for a full-length album, but it did produce this gem of a girl-group homage that made the top-3. Since then she has taught in New York.

Barbara Lynn - "You'll Lose A Good Thing"
from the album You'll Lose A Good Thing (1962)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8

A woman ahead of her time, the singer and blues guitarist (and birthday celebrant today) has had her songs covered by the likes of the Rolling Stones and Moby.

Eddie Hodges - "(Girls, Girls, Girls) Made To Love"
from the EP Eddie Hodges (1963)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #14

The former child actor appeared on Broadway, as well as sang harmony on Frank Sinatra's "High Hopes". But at the ripe old age of 15 he had this coming-of-age pop hit written by Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers.

The Routers - "Let's Go (Pony)"
from the album Let's Go With The Routers (1963)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #19

This cheerleader's classic done by an instrumental surf-rock studio group led by Michael Gordon of the Marketts ("Out Of Limits").

George Maharis - "Teach Me Tonight"
from the album George Maharis Sings! (1962)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #25

The television/film hunk was miles more handsome than Rock Hudson, and could sing as well, as displayed in this top-40 easy-listening hit.

That does it for this week's 60s flashback...tomorrow I'll have 7 more from 1972 and 8 from '82....Cheers!
