French Sweep: January 22, 2013...

Hey gang, it's time to check out the newest songs making their way on to the weekly music chart in France, according to their official singles charts. PSY hangs on for a sixth non-consecutive week at #1 with "Gangnam Style"...

The top entry this week at #9 is David Bowie's new nostalgic single "Where Are We Now?". It's his first foray into the top-10 in this country. Grade: A-

Jumping in at #30 is Dutch dance duo Bingo Players, with "Get Up (Rattle)" featuring the Asian-American hip-hop collective Far East Movement on rap vocals. It's a remix of their previous single "Rattle", and has a clip with some bad-ass fowl. It's already in the top-40 in Belgium. Grade: B-

American rockers Kings Of Leon score their first hit in this country as their 2008 hit "Use Somebody" belatedly enters the chart at #44. Grade: A+

London native Jonathan Jeremiah has his first success anywhere in France with "Gold Dust" with the Dutch-based Metropole Orchestra at #47. Grade: B+

Los Angeles-based musician Jutty Ranx debuts at #64 with "I See You". But unlike the name, his music is pure fun dance-pop. Grade: B

American Idol freakshow Nicki Minaj comes in at #68 with "Va Va Voom", the fourth song from her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded album to make the top-100 here. The first, "Starships", made it all the way to #5 last year. Grade: C+

Parisian funk-rock act Shaka Ponk took their debut single "My Name Is Stain" to #7 on the chart here last year, and now they arrive at #69 with "I'm Picky", a song originally released in 2011. Grade: B-

British boy wonders One Direction come in at #76 with the third single from their current album, "Kiss You". The boyband hasn't has as much success here as in the UK or America, and their biggest single so far is "Live While We're Young" which peaked at #20 last year. Grade: B

French rockers Mademoiselle K, led by Katerine Gierak (hence the name), score their first top-100 single in their country with "Ca Me Vexe" ("How You Upset Me"). It's the title track from their debut album which came out back in 2006. Grade: C-

Parisian electronica duo Justice previously went to #5 on the French charts with "Civilization" from their Audio, Video, Disco album (which rocks). They return at #86 with another track from the set, "Helix". Grade: B+

British X Factor runner-up Olly Murs comes in at #89 with his Maroon-ish (in a good way) "Troublemaker" featuring Flo Rida with a rap cameo. It's Olly's first hit in this country. Grade: A

The last debut on the top-100 in France this week is by Swiss DJ's Jack Holiday and Mike Candys with "The Riddle Anthem" at #97. It's based on English singer Nik Kershaw's "The Riddle" from 1984. The duo previously went to #15 in 2009 with "Insomnia". Grade: C+

That does it for what's new over here....I'll return later today as I cross the border to check out what's up in Germany. Au Revoir!
