Rock Sweep: January 19, 2013...
Hey gang, welcome back to part two of today's "chart sweeps" of the latest music making the charts in Billboard magazine, and this time I've got the newest at rock radio....
On the all-format Rock Airplay chart, "Madness" by Muse tops the chart for a fifth non-consecutive week...
The single debut here is by Los Angeles indie-pop outfit Capital Cities at #49 with a song that was released a year ago, "Safe And Sound", which sounds a bit like M83 and Foster The People's work in a good way, with soaring synth backdrop and pseudo-horn breaks that jump around an extra-funky beat. Highly recommended. Grade: B+

Meanwhile, on the Modern Rock/Alternative format list, "Madness" also stays at #1, this time for an amazing fourteenth week, putting it in a tie for fifth place for longest stays at the top (their own "Uprising" is second with 17 weeks), and there are no new songs on the chart...
Over on the Mainstream Rock format chart, Soundgarden's "Been Away Too Long" remains on top for a fifth week...
Nashville Christian Rock outfit Red have the top new entry at #38 with "Perfect Life". In 2008, they also scored a top-10 hit on this chart with "Death Of Me", a by-the-numbers positive-metal song that does what it intends to do, be headbanging music your parents will be OK with. Grade: C+
The polar opposite of that song is the other debut - it's L.A. grungers Buckcherry with one of the deadly sins, "Gluttony" at #40. It debuted last week over on the Active Rock llist...
At the Triple-A (adult album alternative, or "hipster rock") chart, the Lumineers' "Stubborn Love" refuses to let go of #1 for a third week, and there are no new entries...
On the Active Rock format, Soundgarden stay at #1 for a fourth week, and the sole new song is the aforementioned "Perfect Life" by Red at #37...
Lastly, on the Heritage Rock format, Three Days Grace climb back into the top position with "Chalk Outline" for an eleventh week...
The single debut here at #24 is by heavy metal act Five Finger Death Punch with "The Pride", which is already top-20 on the Active and Mainstream rock formats. They're one of the better metal acts out there, and this tirade on materialism and individuality is pretty well done. Grade: B-
That covers that rock end of the spectrum...I'll return in an hour and a half with the latest on R&B radio. Rock on!
