Songoftheday 5/12/19 - Just remember to keep the faith, and love will be there to light the way...

"Anytime You Need A Friend" - Mariah Carey
from the album Music Box (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #12 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 18

Today's song of the day is from Mariah Carey, whose third studio album Music Box had already scored a pair of #1 pop hits in America with "Dreamlover" and "Hero" as well as the double-sided hit "Without You"/"Never Forget You" in the spring of 1994. The fourth and final single from the record was the gospel-tinged "Anytime You Need A Friend". Written and produced by Mariah with Walter Afanasieff, the song was the most soulful of the tracks she had released to radio from that record so far...

While "Anytime You Need A Friend" was a decent hit, it has the distinction of being Mariah's first to miss the top ten, stalling right under the mark in June of 1994. The song also climbed to #5 on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart, and crossed over to hit #22 on the R&B chart in Billboard magazine. The club remixes of the song, which transformed the ballad into a dancefloor throwdown, helped it to spend a week at #1 on the Dance Club Play chart. Internationally, the single went to #1 in Finland, and made the top ten in Canada (#5), New Zealand (#5), the UK (#8), and Iceland (#9). It also reached the top-40 in the Netherlands (#11), Australia (#12), France (#12), Belgium (#13), Switzerland (#15), Ireland (#16), and Austria (#25).
