Songoftheday 10/28/13 - Alone in a crowd on a bus after work I'm daydreaming, the guy next to me has a woman on his arm my arms are empty...

Rod Stewart - "Some Guys Have All The Luck"
from the album Camouflage (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10

Today's Song of the Day is by Rod "The Mod" Stewart, who came back to pop radio and MTV in a big way in 1984 with help from old pal Jeff Beck on guitar for the raucous "Infatuation". For its follow-up, Rod released a cover of a moderate soul hit from the Persuaders. "Some Guys Have All The Luck", written by Jeff Fortgang, originally went to #39 on the pop chart...

Stewart's version was more uptempo and nodded more in the new wave direction, with production by Michael Omartian...

"Some Guys..." became Rod's second top-10 hit from Camouflage in October of 1984, while also going all the way to #3 on the adult-contemporary (easy-listening) and #27 on the rock radio formats. Internationally it was a hit in England, peaking at #15, and #11 in neighboring Ireland.

In 1986, Louise Mandrell of the Mandrell Sisters went to #22 on the country singles chart in America with her cover (changing the gender to "Girls")...

Reggae-pop singer Maxi Priest returned "Some Guys..." to the UK top 20 in 1987...

lastly, here's Rod performing the song live on TV...

Up tomorrow: A movie about a bar-band goes Milli Vanilli with a group from Rhode Island.
