8 of the 80s: 10/31/13 (1987)...

I'm ready for this week's 80s throwback, and this time out I've got eight more nuggets from 1987, the year of the first National Coming Out Day in the US..(as usual I've included links to buy anything on CD or MP3 when available)..

Peter Cetera - "Big Mistake"
from the album Solitude/Solitaire (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #61
Songwriter: Peter Cetera

This single following two consecutive #1 ballads from the former Chicago singer, but I get America wasn't ready for Peter to semi-rock out.

Mick Jagger - "Throwaway"
from the album Primitive Cool (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #67
Songwriter: Mick Jagger

Mick's second single from his second album was a top-10 rock radio hit, but it was way too late to have any pop radio attention after the horrid "Let's Work" single.

Peter Wolf - "Can't Get Started"
from the album Come As You Are (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #75
Songwriter: Peter Wolf

Peter followed up his last top-40 hit "Come As You Are" with this raucous concert fave..

Martha Davis - "Don't Tell Me The Time"
from the album Policy (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #80
Songwriter: Martha Davis

The former lead singer of the Motels struck out on her own with this dramatic midtempo MOR rock song, but couldn't fetch the heights her band had. It's a shame, I was into this neo-western-like rock music like that of bands like Cock Robin.

Sammy Hagar - "Eagles Fly"
from the album I Never Said Goodbye (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #82
Songwriter: Sammy Hagar

I remember the MTV contest to name this as-yet-untitled last album for Geffen so he could concentrate on Van Halen. Yeah, that lasted.

Paul Simon - "Boy In The Bubble"
from the album Graceland (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #86
Songwriters: Forere Motloheloa, Paul Simon

The track that led off Simon's iconic world-music crossover album deserved a better fate on the charts (as did Graceland's other singles)...

Tesla - "Little Suzi"
from the album Mechanical Resonance (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #91
Songwriters: James Diamond, Tony Hymas

Before the band scored a pair of top-10 pop hits at the end of the 80s, they brought us this cover of a British hit from 1981 by the PHDs.

The Stabilzers - "One Simple Thing"
from the album Tyranny (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #93
Songwriters: Dave Christenson, Rich Nevens

This minor hit from the Erie, Pennsylvania rock band had the distinction of sporting a video directed by budding director David Fincher (Alins, Se7en)...

That's it for this week's 80s flashback...I'll return tomorrow with another song of the day, and my top 100 tunes for the week... thanks for stoppin' by!
