7 of the 70s: 10/10/13 (1974)...

Hey folks, I'm ready to serve some 70's throwback realness, and this week I'm back to 1974, the year Muhammad Ali won his heavyweight boxing title from George Foreman in the "Rumble in the Jungle" in Kinhasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo)...

John Denver - "Annie's Song"
from the album Back Home Again (1974)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1
Songwriter: John Denver

John's gentle waltz to his wife borrowed from Tchaikovsky and heralded their reunion from marital separation, though unfortunately they would divorce nine years down the road.

Carole King - "Jazzman"
from the album Wrap Around Joy (1974)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2
Songwriters: Carole King, Dave Palmer

Tom Scott provides the saxophone sounds that dominate this breezy hit that got a remake from Lisa Simpson on The Simpsons twenty years later...

Chicago - "Call On Me"
from the album Chicago VII (1974)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6
Songwriter: Lee Loughnane

Loughnane, the trumpet player for the band, finally gets a songwriting hit with his sunny single sung by Peter Cetera...

Anne Murray - "Love Song"
from the album Love Song (1974)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #12
Songwriters: Dona Lynn George, Kenny Loggins

This was the Canadian singer's second time around with a Loggins & Messina cover, and she topped the charts at home with this one.

Elvis Presley - "If You Talk In Your Sleep"
from the album Promised Land (1975)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #17
Songwriters: Johnny Christopher, Red West

The "King" recorded this funky little "cheatin'" song at Stax studios in Memphis....

Sami Jo - "Tell Me A Lie"
from the album It Could Have Been Me (1974)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #21
Songwriters: Mickey Buckins, Barbara Wyrick

The former beauty queen from Arkansas had another "cheatin'" song from a different point of view.

(Art) Garfunkel - "Second Avenue"
from the album Garfunkel (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #34
Songwriter: Tim Moore

This one-off single didn't get an album showing until 1988; a shame, since this cover of Philly singer Tim Moore's sweet reflective song was one of Art's best solo efforts.

That's it for this 70's trip...I'll be back later with 8 rockin' hits from 1984...
