Songoftheday 8/8/12 - I heard you on the phone, you took his number...
Glenn Frey - "The One You Love"
from the album No Fun Aloud (1982)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #15 (two weeks)
Weeks in the top-40: 11
Today's Song of the Day was the second single from former (and eventually returning) Eagles member Glenn Frey, whose first solo hit, "I Found Somebody", made the top-40, but by no means matched the success he had with his bandmates. Maybe the straightforward retro-ish rock song didn't connect with the fans of the California "dirty side of LA" rock that he was great it. Either way, he quickly followed it up with an mature ballad that hinted at the "bad romance" themes he's done before with "The One You Love", which put Glenn in the position of the guy cheated on with his lovers' ex...
While the song still missed out on the top-10, it did considerably better, and reaching the #2 spot on the adult-contemporary (soft-rock) chart. It also remains my favorite Frey solo single, and sadly due to his label change after this album, not available in the album version unless you get his No Fun Aloud set (which is a pretty decent if not remarkable listen).
