6 of the 60s: 8/22/12...

Hey folks, time for this week's "6 of the 60s", where I bring you a half dozen nuggets from the golden era of rock. This time out it's six from the year 1964...

J. Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers - "Last Kiss"
from the album Last Kiss (1964)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2

The record detailing a tragic car accident was made worse by the singer and manager crashing their car the same year, killing the manager and putting Wilson in crutches. He ended up dying of alcoholism in the early 90s, before he could see Pearl Jam reviving the song..

The 4 Seasons - "Dawn (Go Away)"
from the album Dawn (Go Away) and 11 Great Songs (1964)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3

The Jersey Boys were kept out of the top spot on the pop chart by the Beatles on this epic wrong-side-of-the-tracks song.

Little Anthony & The Imperials - "Goin' Out Of My Head"
from the album Goin' Out Of My Head (1965)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6

One of the most amazing performances from the waning years of the doo-wop era, by the master of the falsetto. Still gives me goosebumps alone in the car.

The Beatles - "And I Love Her"
from the album A Hard Day's Night (1964)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #12

One of the Fab Four's forgotten classics. McCartney can go dark as well.

Chuck Berry - "You Never Can Tell"
from the album St. Louis To Liverpool (1964)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #14

Berry wrote this gem when he was in prison for human trafficking for transporting a 14 year old across state lines. But it's so positive you never could tell.

Cilla Black - "You're My World"
from the EP It's For You (1964)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #26

Something from the other end of the Liverpool music spectrum, Black wailed this out like a Stepford wife on hyperdrive.
