Songoftheday 2/23/23 - People ask me where you've been and I tell them we're just friends, 'cause it's so obvious that it's never gonna work for us...

"You Gets No Love" - Faith Evans featuring P. Diddy & Loon
from the album Faithfully (2001)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #38 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 1

Today's song comes from R&B singer Faith Evans, whose second album Keep The Faith had scored a trio of top-40 pop crossover hits with "Never Gonna Let You Go" and two top ten placings with "Love Like This" and "All Night Long".  In the spring of 2001, Evans would collaborate with fellow Bad Boy Records singer Carl Thomas for a track on the label's album The Saga Continues..., nominally released under Sean Combs' P. Diddy name. "Can't Believe", which sampled a track from Nas-affiliated rap supergroup The Firm, did pretty decently on urban radio, spending over seven months on Billboard magazine's R&B Songs chart, peaking at #14, but stalled down at #56 on their pop Hot 100. At the 2002 Grammy Awards, the song was nominated for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group, which went to Destiny's Child for their "Survivor".

That song would also appear on Faith's third release, Faithfully, which came out in the fall of 2001. The next single from that set would be the uptempo break-up track "You Gets No Love". It was written by Evans with producer Michaelangelo Saulsberry along with Kameelah Williams of the female vocal group 702, Toni Coleman, Mechalie Jamison, and Andre Wilson, also featured rap cameos from P. Diddy and newcomer Loon. Loon, born Chauncey Hawkins in New York, was signed to Bad Boy, and this was his first big exposure. In the song Faith summarily dispatched an unfaithful lover, saying she's already been downgrading her ties to him to her friends, and now she's cutting off everything. It's sassy, and the production is surprisingly bright and flashy for her. P. Diddy plays the spurned guy making excuses, as Loon twists the knife into the guy saying he's through with him as well as a friend. Oddly enough, the music video shot for the song wasn't for the radio remix with Diddy and Loon, but solely Faith, though she does rap on it a little...

"You Gets No Love" returned Faith to the top-40 on Billboard's Hot 100 for a week in December of 2001, while rising to #8 on their R&B Songs chart. On the radio, the song peaked at #7 on the R&B Airplay chart, #26 on the older-skewing Adult R&B station list, and #35 on the dance-oriented Rhythmic format. The Faithfully album, released in November of that year, went to #14 on the Billboard 200 sales tally, and #2 on the R&B Albums list, going on to sell over a half million copies. At the Grammy Awards in 2003, Faithfully was nominated for Best Contemporary R&B Album, losing to Ashanti for her self-titled debut disc.

Evans and this album will be back to the series, as well a P. Diddy and Loon as lead artists on their own.

Next up, Faith appearing on Showtime At The Apollo....

Up tomorrow: A country singer that actually tapped into the tragedy of 9/11 instead of the jingoism.
