Robbed hit of the week 2/6/23 - Jill Scott's "The Way"...
"The Way" - Jill Scott
from the album Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1 (2000)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #60
This week's "robbed hit" comes from soul singer Jill Scott, whose debut album Who Is Jill Scott? had seen its second charting single "A Long Walk" make the top ten on Billboard magazine's R&B Singles chart and nearly make the pop top-40 in the spring of 2001. The final single pulled from the record was "The Way", written by Jill with Andre Harris, who co-produced the track with Vidal Davis. It's a simple love song about how her man brightens her day and she'll pick them over anything else. The jazz-infused production is beautiful, as it Jill's free-flow vocal delivery that hits notes like a musical instrument. When the chorus comes in, it struts through my brain like an assured lover, and I'm all here for it...
While "The Way" climbed to #2 on Billboard's older-skewing Adult R&B airplay chart, and peaked at #15 on the main R&B Singles list, the song stalled in the lower half of the "pop" Hot 100 in September of 2001.
