Twostepcub's New Music Roundup 2/25/23...
It's time for my weekly new music roundup, where I feature the big
entries on the Hot 100 as well as my personal choices of the songs
making the various radio charts in Billboard magazine, as well as on the charts in the United Kingdom. This week two songs come in strong in their first week entering in the top-40 on Billboard's Hot 100.
"Love You Anyway" - Luke Combs
from the album Gettin' Old (2023)
Billboard Hot 100 debut: #15
Official British Singles Chart debut: #62
The second preview track of Combs' upcoming fourth album (well, depends on if you count it as a companion to last year's Growin' Up or not) is a powerful and emotional take on being the one in the relationship whose in love with someone who isn't. The subject matter fits the traditional country production in which the fiddle and his vocals truly shine here. This deserves to be another #1 hit for him.

"Lost" - Linkin Park
from the album Meteora (20th Anniversary Edition) (2023)
Hot 100 debut: #38
Billboard Rock & Alternative Airplay debut: #1
Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay debut: #6
Billboard Alternative Rock Airplay debut: #4
British Singles Chart debut: #18
Six years after Chester Bennington sadly took his life, a finished song that didn't make the cut originally sees the light of day thanks to a reissue of the nu-metal giants sophomore album from 2003. It must have been a tough choice to leave it behind, the song fits so well with the rest of the album, perhaps even more with their debut (maybe that's the reason), and the pain in Bennington's lyrics and voice foretold the tragedy to come.
"Fix'n To Break" - Bailey Zimmerman
from the single (2023)
Hot 100 debut: #84
It's a good week for sad country songs about rocky relationships, and Zimmerman's and Comb's compliment each other. This one has a little bit more optimism and the driving midtempo helps in the matter. Bailey's gravelly voice works well with this.
from the single (2022)
Billboard Adult Contemporary debut: #28
Journeyman Marz teams up with guitarist Schroeder of Smashing Pumpkins and producer Roman Dunn (Electropoint) for this ultraslick slice of adult pop that makes for nice background music.
"Ghosts Again" - Depeche Mode
from the album Memento Mori (2023)
Rock & Alternative Airplay debut: #24
Alternative Rock Airplay debut: #27
Billboard Adult Album Alternative (Triple-A) Rock Airplay debut: #30
Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs debut: #18
Returning after the passing of original member Andy Fletcher, Dave Gahan and Martin Gore soldier on with this simple yet regal treatise on the passing of time and people in ones life. Undoubtedly my pick of the week.
"Kill Or Be Killed" - Muse
from the album Will Of The People (2022)
Mainstream Rock Airplay debut: #34
It fascinates me that in the age where veteran bands soften their sound in time, Matt Bellamy and Muse have gone in the opposite direction, albeit with Matt's extra-dramatic vocals intact. This headbanger is a fan favorite on tour.
"Ice Cold" - Highly Suspect
from the album The Midnight Demon Club (2022)
Mainstream Rock Airplay debut: #39
The multi-faceted hard rock mines the sound of 1983 with this straight-forward synth-rock number.
"Wolf" - The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
from the album Cool It Down (2022)
Triple-A Rock Airplay debut: #28
This entrancing new modern rock excursion from the trio is possibly their most accessible yet most complex to date. A true winner from the album, and what a stunning music video.
"Thinking About You" - Beck
from the single (2023)
Triple-A Rock Airplay debut: #34
The electro-nerd-rock giant goes soft and quiet like in his Sea Change phase for this acoustic piece that is a breath of fresh air in his repertoire.
"Hands To Myself" - Myron Elkins
from the album Factories, Farms, and Amphetamines (2023)
Triple-A Rock Airplay debut: #37
Fans of Chris Stapleton should definitely give this bluesy rocker from western Michigan a listen. He defnintely sounds decades older than his 22 years.
"Honey" - Samia
from the album Honey (2023)
Triple-A Rock Airplay debut: #40
Yes, she's a "nepo-baby" (the daughter of actress Kathy Najimy and comedian/musician Dan Finnerty) but this gem of a song is a highlight from her second album and deserves to be heard on its own right.
"Right For Me" - J. Howell
from the album Honest (2022)
Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay debut: #46
From his second album, Howell explores the same theme as Combs and Zimmerman do on coming to terms with a relationship that's meant to end, but drapes it in a lush soulful lite-Afrobeat production that make you shimmy in your seat. A great introduction to me for his work.
"Don't Think You Ever Loved Me" - Tyrese
from the album Beautiful Pain (2023)
Billboard Adult R&B Airplay debut: #23
Also in the same vein is the new break-up ballad from Tyrese Gibson, who gets an assist from Lenny Kravitz in dismissing his ex all the way back to 1974 it seems. Is cuffing season truly over?
from the album Tantra (2022)
Adult R&B Airplay debut: #25
This year-old collab from new-school and sorta-old-school soulsters finally is getting some radio love, and for good reason. Yes, it's another end-of-love song, but the pair truly wring the emotion out of this.
"Been Thinking" - Tyla
from the single (2023)
Billboard Rhythmic Airplay debut: #36
South African newcomer Tyla brings a whole new scope to the Afrobeats scene with this infectious pulsating groove that's better than half the new "electronica" tracks flooding the market this week.
from the single (2023)
Dance/Electronic Songs debut: #38
Italian production duo pair up with British singer/songwriter/producer counterparts for this driving electro-pop nugget that's great for the car playlist.
"Pearls" - Jessie Ware
from the album That! Feels Good!
Dance/Electronic Songs debut: #44
The British singer delves even deeper in the neo-disco pool for this exquisite banger of a song that a close second behind Depeche Mode for my pick of the week. I just can't wait for the album to come.
"Call Me What You Like" - Lovejoy
from the EP WU&IO (2023)
British Singles Chart debut: #32
The British indie rockers get like a snarkier version of 5 Seconds of Summer with this power-pop release of energy that is quite damn good.
"Running Out Of Time" - Paramore
from the album This Is Why (2023)
British Singles Chart debut: #74
My personal favorite from their This Is Why album, Hayley Williams and the boys get truly trippy on this nuanced rocker.
"Put A Light On Me" - Sam Ryder
from the album There's Nothing But Space, Man! (2022)
British Singles Airplay debut: #40
The darling of 2022's Eurovision Song Contest proves yet again he's not a one-trick pony that is one of the best tracks from his debut album.
I'll return with my picks of the albums making the charts this week along with some personal picks.
