Robbed hit of the week 6/20/22 - DMX and Sisqo's "What You Want"...

"What You Want" - DMX featuring Sisqo
from the album ...And Then There Was X (1999)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #49

This week's "robbed hit" comes from the late rapper DMX, who had scored his second top-40 crossover hit on Billboard magazine's pop Hot 100 chart in the spring of 2000 with "Party Up (Up In Here)" from his third album ...And Then There Was X. His follow-up would change up from the club anthem of that former hit to a grab at radio with a rework of album track "What These Bitches Want". The revamped single, "What You Want", as well as the album version featured singer Sisqo from the R&B group Dru Hill, who was himself riding high with a pair of huge pop hits in "Thong Song" and "Incomplete". Sisqo's bandmate Nokio produced the record and co-wrote it with the pair. In it DMX raps about the throngs of women throwing themselves at him, but reminding he's got a wife, and is "that what you want" meaning just flings on the side. Calling them "chickens" doesn't really help in the humanization of the subject, but I guess that was never his bag to begin with. Claiming giving them gifts to send them away should be enough, and despite its radio-friendly sound he clearly isn't family-friendly...

While "What You Want" just missed the top ten on Billboard's R&B chart at #11, the song stopped just above the halfway mark on the pop Hot 100 in September of 2000. The track also got to #22 on the Rap Songs list, and #29 on the dance-oriented Rhythmic radio format chart.
