"Funky Soul Makossa" was a club hit for Nairobi (the alias used by producers Arthur Baker and John Robie) and the Awesome Foursome, rappers Mike Master, Sugar K, and Kirk and Nat Robinson, the latter two going on to be the duo Audio Two. Released as a stand-alone single, the record is a remake of the predisco instrumental from Manu Dibango from the 70's with rap verses from the group on top. On Billboard magazine's Disco Top-80 chart, the single peaked at #18 in 1983, while making it to #68 on the R&B Singles chart.
