"Jumpin' Jumpin'" - Destiny's Child
from the album The Writing's On The Wall (1999)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3 (five weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 26
Today's song comes from the vocal group Destiny's Child, whose second album The Writing's On The Wall had already spun off three hits including "Bug A Boo" and two #1 pop singles in "Bills, Bills, Bills" and "Say My Name". However by the time of that latter song, original members LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson were unceremoniously booted from the group with fill-ins Michelle Williams and Farah Franklin lipsyncing their parts on the music video. That continued with the fourth and final single, which was even reissued to have the cover with the newbies on it. "Jumpin' Jumpin'", written by lead singer Beyonce Knowles with producer Chad Elliott and Rufus Moore, the song is a simple club party track that advises everyone to leave their significant others at home and hang with your friends. It very slyly suggests cheating to get back at an inattentive lover, but the emphasis is more on the dancing than the humping. The production definitely favors the groove over all, and the music video is pure genius, with the frenetic moving of the camera giving bounce to the visuals as well as the music...
"Jumpin' Jumpin'" became the fourth top-40 hit on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 chart, and third to make the top ten, on the American pop chart in August of 2000. The single actually did better on the pop side than on the urban side, where it peaked at #8 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart, while getting to #3 on the dance-oriented Rhythmic format list. Internationally, the single reached the top ten in Australia (#2), the UK (#5), Iceland (#5), New Zealand (#6), Canada (#8), and the Netherlands (#10). Destiny's Child will be back to the series, but minus Franklin, who found herself shoved out of the group shortly after.
