"What About Now" - Lonestar
from the album Lonely Grill (1999)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: 30 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8
Today's song comes from the country band Lonestar, whose third album Lonely Grill crossed over big into the pop mainstream with their #1 country/#1 pop hit "Amazed", as well as a #1 country radio follow-up "Smile". The fourth single from the album (lead single "Saturday Night" gloriously tanked) was the uptempo song "What About Now". Written by Aaron Barker, Ron Harbin, and Anthony Smith, the song has lead singer Richie McDonald proposing, not really marriage but to run away with him into a life of taking chances. The driving beat of the production accentuates McDonald's pleas, with no plans but just "trust me" attitude. The music overpowers the flimsy lyrics and makes it one of their best...
"What About Now" became the third song from Lonely Grill to make the crossover Hot 100 top-40 in August of 2000. The song spent a full month (four weeks) at #1 on Billboard magazine's Country Singles chart. Internationally, the single also topped the Canadian Country chart. But we're not through with either Lonestar or the album in this series yet.
