"Bug A Boo" - Destiny's Child
from the album The Writing's On The Wall (1999)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #33 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 7
Today's song comes from Destiny's Child, who had scored their first #1 pop hit in the summer of 1999 with the lead single from their sophomore album The Writing's On The Wall, "Bills, Bills, Bills". That song targeted men who can't support themselves let alone be an equal partner in a relationship, and its follow-up went in that vein as well. "Bug A Boo", written by producer Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs and Xscape singer Kandi Burriss along with group members Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, Letoya Luckett, and Latavia Roberson, tells off a guy that keeps bothering them, using totally dated 90's terms like pagers, call block, and AOL over one of their most infectious (and actually Timbaland/Elliott-like) grooves. Beyonce takes full reins at lead on this track, and it is a sign of what was to come. The music video has them avoiding these guys through the whole song until the end, which is a headscratcher...
"Bug A Boo" became the second top-40 pop hit from The Writing's On The Wall in October of 1999. The song also climbed to #15 on Billboard magazine's R&B Singles chart, while getting to #6 on the Rhythmic radio format list. Internationally, the single was a top ten hit in the Netherlands (#6) and the UK (#9), while reaching the top-40 in Germany (#20), Belgium (#24F/#32W), Australia (#26), and Sweden (#29). Destiny's Child will be back, but half its lineup will be replaced for the video. Scandal.
