"Gotta Man" - Eve
from the album Let There Be Eve...Ruff Ryders' First Lady (1999)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #26
Weeks in the Top-40: 8
Today's song comes from rapper Eve, who scored a top-40 crossover hit with her debut single "What Ya Want" in the autumn of 1999. Her followup single, and proper lead for her debut album Let There Be Eve, was "Gotta Man". Written by Eve (Jeffers) and producer Kaseem "Swizz Beatz" Dean, the track has Eve professing how hard she'll stay true to her man, to the point of throwing hands and bailing him out of jail. It would be an interesting take on the women who gravitate to the "bad boys", but its spoiled by the playground singsong chorus that permeates the entire record like a giant fart. Nevertheless, the record did catch on with the MTV crowd, and Eve found herself with a second hit...
"Gotta Man" became Eve's second top-40 pop crossover hit in America in November of 1999. The song rose to #10 on Billboard magazine's R&B Singles chart, and peaked at #8 on their Rap Singles list. Both Eve and her debut album will be back to the series.
