"Stay The Night" - IMx (Immature)
from the album Introducing IMx (1999)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #23 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10

Today's song comes from R&B group Immature, who landed their fifth top-40 crossover hit with their contribution to the soundtrack to the TV show All That, "Watch Me Do My Thang", at the start of 1997. When they returned two years later, Marques Houston, Jerome Jones, and Kelton Kessee changed their name to the "matured" IMx for their fifth studio album Introducing IMx. The lead single from the record was "Stay The Night", written by Jones with producer Tony Isaac.  The result was something that sounds like a group of guys got in a room and stayed until they created a song that was half Kevin "Shakepere" Briggs ("No Scrubs") and half Tim "Timbaland" Mosley ("Are You That Somebody"). The guys do a respectable job in delivering an updated sound, though I can't help but think of the other producers' work when I'm listening. And damn did they try to throw just enough money into this music video to give the image of one of those high-budget epics on MTV...

"Stay The Night" became Immature/IMx's sixth, and so far last, top-40 pop hit in January of 2000. The song climbed to #20 on Billboard magazine's R&B Singles chart, and #9 on the Rhythmic radio format list. Internationally, the single was a top-20 hit in the Netherlands at #12. The Introducing IMx album, released in October of 1999, peaked at #101 on the Billboard 200 sales tally, and #31 on their R&B Albums list.

Perhaps from the lesser-than-anticipated reception of the single and album, and the blown budget from the video, IMx were let go from their label MCA. Switching to have their album released by TUG Entertainment, run by producer Chris Stokes, the trio released a second album under the moniker, IMx, in 2001. Lead single "First Time" stopped at #69 on the R&B chart, followed by "Beautiful (You Are)" at #71 on the list. The album climbed to #126 on the Billboard 200 and #26 on the R&B Albums list. The trio split shortly after, with Houston and Jones pursuing a solo career. Jones, rechristening himself "Young Rome", released Food For Thought in 2004. From the set the song "After Party" which featured Houston as well as B2K singer Omarion, was a minor R&B hit at #61. As for Marques Houston, he will return to the series.
