Songoftheday 1/6/22 - Baby, I'm so into you, you got that something what can I do?

"(You Drive Me) Crazy" - Britney Spears
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12

Today's song is from Britney Spears, whose debut album had scored a #1 hit out of the gate with title track "Baby One More Time" as well as top-40 follow-up "Sometimes" in the summer of 1999. The third single from the album was specially remixed for the radio by producers Max Martin and Rami Yacoub called the "Stop! Remix", with redone vocals for the movie Drive Me Crazy starring Melissa Joan Hart from the TV show Sabrina The Teenage Witch and Adrian Grenier (who would eventually be more famous from being on the show Entourage). Written by the Swedish team of Martin, Jörgen Elofsson, Per Magnusson, and co-producer David Kreuger, the record rattles around like a boardwalk amusement ride down the shore. The synth "ringing bells" remind me of a throwback to the disco era classic "Ring My Bell" by Anita Ward. The lyrics are pretty trite, with Britney cooing about falling head over heels for a guy, but that's to be expected with a team of Swedish men with English as a second language all writing. It's more about the groove, and the hook, and damn does this have both, maybe even more so than her breakthrough hit. The music video has Spears dancing it up at a club that apparently has Hart and Grenier partying along...

"Crazy" became Britney's second top ten pop hit in America in November of 1999. The song rose to #9 on Billboard magazine's Rhythmic radio chart, and #4 on the Mainstream Top-40 format list. Internationally, the single topped the chart in Belgium and Iceland, and reached the top ten in France (#2), the Netherlands (#2), Sweden (#2), Norway (#2), Hungary (#2), Canada (#3), Ireland (#3), Finland (#3), Germany (#4), Switzerland (#4), the UK (#5), New Zealand (#5), Italy (#7), Denmark (#9), and Austria (#10). Both Britney and this album will be back to the series.
