Songoftheday 11/21/18 - Tell me what can I say what am I gonna do, how should I feel when everything is you you you...
"Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" - Taylor Dayne
from the album Soul Dancing (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #20 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 9
Today's song of the day comes from dance-pop singer Taylor Dayne, whose booming voice was instantly recognizable and powered into seven consecutive top ten hits on Billboard magazine's pop Hot 100 chart (with an eighth just missing by a couple of notches). In the spring of 1990 she went all the way to #1 with the ballad "Love Will Lead You Back", expanding her range as well as her audience, while the album it came from, Can't Fight Fate, also scored with "With Every Beat Of My Heart", "I'll Be Your Shelter", and "Heart Of Stone". In 1993, Dayne returned with her third release on Arista Records, Soul Dancing, but instead of rolling out another club banger (like album opener "I'll Wait"), label chief Clive Davis had her cover a smooth disco song from the 1970's. "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love", which was written and originally performed by soul legend Barry White, Davis paired her up with Robert Clivilles and David Cole, the C+C Music Factory guys, to attempt to "freshen up" the track and provide in-house remixing as well...
Taylor's take on "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" became her ninth and so far last top-40 pop hit in the U.S. in July of 1993. The song also climbed to #15 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart, while the remixes of the song made it most successful in clubs, spending two weeks at #2 on their Dance Club Play tally. Internationally, the single actually collectively did better than anything on her last album, hitting #2 in Australia, and reaching the top ten in Belgium (#6), Canada (#8), and the Netherlands (#9). It also made the top-40 in the UK (#14), Switzerland (#17), Ireland (#19), New Zealand (#25), Austria (#29), and Sweden (#34).
The second single from Soul Dancing, "Send Me A Lover", was a powerful ballad that should have emulated the success of "Love Will Lead You Back", but it didn't even reach the top 20, though it climbed to #19 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart, while going to #22 in Canada. A third release, the Shep Pettibone-assisted album opener "I'll Wait", peaked at #3 on the American dance chart as well as hitting #29 on the British singles list. However, the lackluster sales and reception compared to her debut caused Arista to prematured shut the door on Taylor, releasing a career-capping Greatest Hits set, releasing a track from Soul Dancing, "Say A Prayer", as a single, which went to #7 on the dance chart in America, and #58 in the UK.
Leaving Arista and regrouping under the indie label Neptune, Taylor released her fourth album Naked Without You in 1998. It didn't chart on the pop Hot 100 or the foreign lists, but it did have two top ten club hits with "Naked Without You" (#3 in 1998). Two years later, a song she contributed to the gay culture movie Flawless, "Planet Love", nabbed Taylor her second #1 Club Play hit. In 2007 Dayne returned, not only with a stand alone single, "I'm Not Featuring You", which went to #2 on the Dance chart, followed by the lead release from her fifth and so far latest studio set, Satisfied. "Beautiful" made her a total of three chartbusters. Most recently she had a top ten hit in 2011 with "Floor On Fire" (#7). She continues to play retro dance concerts as well as a ton of "pride" event, with her LGBT following one of the strongest in the business.

Barry White's original "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" went to #1 on both the pop and R&B charts in Billboard in 1974, before they had a "disco" chart...
Here's Taylor performing the song live on TV in 1993...
...and next is the "Special Edition mix", one of the three that helped the song take a couple weeks in the runner up spot on the club chart...
Finally, from a more recent show...
Have a great Thanksgiving, those in America celebrating! I'll be back on Friday with yet another cover of a soul nugget from the 70's, this time a new jack swing group slowing it down with some Stevie.
