"Let's Wait Awhile" - Janet Jackson
from the album Control (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11
Today's Song of the Day comes from Janet Jackson, whose breakthrough album Control had already spun out four top-5 singles with "What Have You Done For Me Lately", "Nasty", the title track, and the #1 "When I Think Of You". The fourth single from the project was the delicate ballad "Let's Wait Awhile", written by Jackson and friend Melanie Andrews with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. An earnest and almost cooish plea to hold off on "knockin' boots" until their relationship develops, the song was a sweet counterpoint to the fast and easy fare that dominated pop radio (aka Monday's "SOTD" "Brand New Lover")...
"Let's Wait Awhile" made it all the way to the runner-up spot on the American pop chart in March of 1987. The single topped the R&B chart for a week, and stopped at #2 on the adult contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart in Billboard magazine. Internationally, the record climbed to #3 in the UK (her third top-10 there), #4 in Ireland, and top-40 in Canada, Germany, Australia, and the Netherlands.
