Song You Should Know About 4/16/15 - Nile Rodgers and Chic's "I'll Be There"..
Today's SYSKA is from the legendary disco group Chic, who dominated the clubs in the late 70s with such classics as "Good Times", "Le Freak", and "I Want Your Love". However, their brand as the biggest of the disco/soul acts (as opposed to the Bee Gees' disco/pop) caused their stock to plummet as the backlash in the 80s towards the genre cut off their access to radio airplay. During the decade, members Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards were more known behind the deck, producing hits from David Bowie, Duran Duran, and Madonna, while drummer Tony Thompson played in the Duran spin-off the Power Station (which Edwards produced). Sadly, Edwards died in 1996, while Thompson passed on in 2003.
In 2013, French electro-dance duo Daft Punk brought the act back to the spotlight when Niles played on their #2 US hit "Get Lucky". With that exposure to a whole new generation, Niles set out to record new "Chic" music with new singers including club hitmaker Kimberly Davis. With the album It's About Time set to come out in June, Niles and his new "Chic" released last month, and with a sound that harkens but doesn't mimic his past heights (though the lyrics at times veer into that territory), it's the perfect car jam to kick off a long weekend...
