Robbed hit of the week 4/6/15 - Bobby Brown's "Girlfriend"...

"Girlfriend" - Bobby Brown
from the album King Of Stage (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #57

This week's "robbed hit" comes from then-teen R&B singer Bobby Brown, who was a member of the Boston vocal group New Edition until being kicked out/quitting in 1986. Staying at the MCA label, Brown released his debut solo album, the ambitiously titled King Of Stage, at the close of 1986. The first single from the set, "Girlfriend", was the same sugary retro-sound the group was originally known for, and surprisingly didn't herald any change in sound or image a solo turn usually takes....

While "Girlfriend" took Bobby to #1 on the R&B chart in Billboard magazine, the track stalled down at a disappointing #57 on the pop chart. Of course, those fortunes would be changed with his second album, a little thing called Don't Be Cruel, with five top-10 pop hits on it.
