"All Cried Out" - Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam with Full Force
from the album Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam with Full Force (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13
Today's Song of the Day comes from the New York freestyle dance music trio Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, whose debut album had spawned two classic singles of the genre, the top-40 "I Wonder If I Take You Home" and the underground classic "Can You Feel The Beat". The third single from the record was the genre's first big "power-ballad", "All Cried Out". Written by collaborators Full Force and with members Paul Anthony and "Bow-Legged Lou" singing backup, the song became the act's biggest hit up to that time...
"All Cried Out" became Lisa Lisa's first top-10 pop hit in October of 1986, while scaling even higher on the R&B chart, peaking at #3. Internationally, the single was their first minor hit in Canada, stopping down at #96.
And whatever problems you might have with Lisa's vocal limitations (I don't), her street-smart earnestness really sells this heartbreak ballad, providing the soundtrack to millions of teenage breakups that year.

Eleven years later, R&B vocal quartet Allure covered "All Cried Out" (with 112 subbing in for Full Force) for a single that went higher on the Hot 100 than the original, as it climbed to #4 on the pop chart and #9 on the R&B list...
In 2011, neo-soul singer Jill Scott recorded "All Cried Out" with Doug E Fresh on her Light Of The Sun album...
