Songoftheday 6/4/13 - You consider me a young apprentice, caught between a Scylla and Carybdis...

The Police - "Wrapped Around Your Finger"
from the album Synchronicity (1983)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10

Today's Song of the Day is by the new wave/post-punk trio The Police, whose groundbreaking (and final) album Synchronicity had already spun off three hits in 1983 with the two months at #1 "Every Breath You Take", its top-3 followup "King Of Pain", and "Synchronicity II". For their fourth release came the haunting romantic powerplay of "Wrapped Around Your Finger", written by singer Sting and produced by the band with Hugh Padgham. The accompanying video, directed by future top-10 pop stars Godley & Creme and featuring them in slow motion, became just as iconic as their "Every Breath..." clip...

"Wrapped..." became the Police's seventh and final single to make the top 10, and the last to even chart in the top-40. It peaked one notch higher in the UK, and topped the pop chart in Ireland for three weeks.

After the dysfunctional recording of the album and the failed attempt at a followup, the group had one more chart entry, a drum-machine-induced remake of "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86" that peaked right under the top-40 at #46, before disbanding with each going their own ways. They managed to reunite in 2007 for a tour ($$$) before again splitting up.
