Songoftheday 3/2/13 - There's a little black spot on the sun today, it's the same old thing as yesterday...

The Police - "King Of Pain"
from the album Synchronicity (1983)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13

Today's Song of the Day was the second single from the Police's final studio album, Synchronicity. The band kicked off the set with their biggest hit and the biggest single of 1983, "Every Breath You Take". The follow-up, "King Of Pain", was equally as moody and twice as descriptive...

"King Of Pain", even without an official video for MTV, still reached the top-3 on the US pop chart, and topped the rock radio list for five weeks. The single also reached the top of the Canadian chart, and went top-10 in France and Ireland, and top-20 in their native Britain.

Sixteen years later, Alanis Morissette covered the song on her Unplugged album, and the single was a minor hit in the Netherlands.

In 2007, heavy metal act Mudvayne also took on the song...

A couple years ago, Lady GaGa and the Police's Sting collaborated live on the song a couple times...

....lastly, here's Sting and the band live back in 1984...
