7 of the 70s: 6/20/13 (1970)...

Hey gang, it's time to roll out another 70s throwback, and this week I'm back to 1970, the year Soyuz 9 with a two-man crew was launched by Russia.

Bread - "Make It With You"
from the album On The Waters (1970)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1
Songwriter: David Gates

The first (well, only) mixtape I ever got from my first boyfriend had this as the first song. Of course, naive me thought it was because he wanted our relationship to "make it". AH, youth.

Mungo Jerry - "In The Summertime"
from the album Electronically Tested (1971)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3
Songwriter: Ray Dorset

In time for the changing season, this British rock group took an almost ragtime groove and made a stoner summer classic with it.

100 Proof Aged In Soul - "Somebody's Been Sleeping"
from the album Somebody's Been Sleeping In My Bed (1971)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8
Songwriters: Angelo Bond, General Johnson, Greg Perry

This rock-soul hybrid group were formed by Motown's Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting/producing team, and this update on the trio's old sound was their finest moment.

Joe South & The Believers - "Walk A Mile In My Shoes"
from the album Don't It Make You Want To Go Home? (1970)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #12
Songwriter: Joe South

A funky little "come together" number by the late singer/songwriter that the Supreme Court should take heed pending their marriage equality vote. See also, Paula Deen.

The Moody Blues - "Question"
from the album A Question Of Balance (1970)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #21
Songwriter: Justin Hayward

The prog-rock group's second-biggest hit in their home country (after, surprisingly, "Go Now") is this anti-Vietnam missive.

Joe Cocker - "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window"
from the album Joe Cocker! (1969)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #30
Songwriter: Paul McCartney (as Lennon/McCartney)

The British soul growler took this Abbey Road snippet about crazy fangirls and transformed it to a blues romp.

The Archies - "Who's Your Baby"

from the album The Archies Greatest Hits (1970)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #40
Songwriters: Jeff Barry, Andy Kim

The "coolest cartoon band in the land" featured backing vocals from a pre-"Rock Me Gently" Andy Kim, who co-wrote this single.

That's it for this week's 70s trip...I'll be back later with 8 from 1980...
