"A Matter Of Trust" - Billy Joel
from the album The Bridge (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10
Today's Song of the Day is by the New York "piano man" Billy Joel, who was last seen with a top-10 hit in the summer of 1986 with "Modern Woman" from the Ruthless People soundtrack. That song also served as the first single from his tenth studio release The Bridge, which veered from the retro groove of his massive An Innocent Man album back to the more mature ponderings of his Nylon Curtain record. The next single from the set, "A Matter Of Trust", was dominated by a chunky guitar hook, but underneath had a pithy reflection on a more adult relationship, with lyrics much more deep than the "loudness" of the record leads to believe...
"A Matter Of Trust" became the second top-10 pop hit in the U.S. from The Bridge in October of 1986. The single also crossed over to both the Mainstream Rock (#14) and Adult Contemporary (#17) radio charts in Billboard magazine. Internationally, while the record went all the way to #3 in Australia and was a top-20 hit in Canada, it stalled below the halfway point at #52 on the British singles chart.
