Songoftheday 6/14/13 - You're liftin' me up never let me down, and I smile whenever you're around...

Christine McVie - "Got A Hold On Me"
from the album Christine McVie (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11

Today's Song of the Day was the first hit by the third member of Fleetwood Mac's most recognized lineup to go solo (after Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham). Christine McVie started out in the band years before the other two, however, after marrying bassist John McVie in 1970. As part of the group she was responsible for writing and singing lead on some of their biggest hits, like "Say You Love Me", "You Make Lovin' Fun", and "Don't Stop". On 1982's Mirage set, Christine was even a bigger presence than the feuding Stevie and Lindsey, with two of her songs, "Hold Me" and "Love In Store", were two of the three top-40 hits from the record.

After Mirage, Christine recorded her self-titled second solo album (the first was before her stint with FM). With guests like Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, it was nonetheless much more mellow than the usual Mac fare. The first single released was "Got A Hold On Me", written by McVie with Todd Sharp from her studio band, with Buckingham cameoing on guitar and Winwood on keyboards....

With McVie's Fleetwood Mac cred, the easy-going song still was able to go to #1 on the rock chart for a couple weeks, while spending a month on top of the adult-contemporary chart. It would be her biggest solo hit to date.

Up tomorrow: The Gambler goes lite-disco.
