Brit Sweep: October 28, 2012...

Hey gang, as the East Coast battens down the hatches in preparation for Hurricane Sandy, it's time for this week's recap of the new songs making it on to the Official Music Chart in the United Kingdom.

This week singer/songwriter Labrinth nabs his first #1 record as the sixth (!) single from his debut album, "Behind Your Beautiful", featuring Emeli Sande', leaps from #85 to #1. It's also Emeli's second charttopper, both in a featured role - Professor Green's "Read All About It" did the trick last year.

X Factor boyband finalists that are not One Direction, JLS, have the top debut this week at #6 with "Hottest Girl In The World". They came in second to Alexandra Burke during their stint on the show, and since then ten of their eleven singles have reached the top-10, and five have reached the top, the last time being "She Makes Me Wanna" from last year (they also have three more #1s as featured artists in charity singles)...

Sande' bookends herself on the top-10 as she also debuts at #10 in a featured part on musician/rapper Naughty Boy's "Wonder". It's his first top-10, his previous high mark was his debut, "Phat Beach (I'll Be Ready)", a #36 hit in 2006...This is my fave of the week...

London-based alternative rock band Bastille's second single becomes their first top-40 hit in the UK as "Flaws" comes in at #21. Their first, "Bad Blood", went to #90 earlier this year. This video was shot on Coney Island...

"Music's Jennifer Aniston", Taylor Swift, has the biggest-selling album in Britain this week with her new one, Red, and a track from it, "Everything Has Changed", featuring British singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran, comes in at #50....

British producer/musician Julio Bashmore has a hit in his own right at "Au Seve" arrives at #55...

Newcomer Lauren Aquilina debuts at #72 with "Fools", she's been a popular YouTube artist doing mostly covers before..

As former "grime" star and former N-Dubz member Dappy's debut album Good Intentions comes in in the top-10 on the albums chart, "Ying Yang" places at #73, the fifth song from the set to make the top-100...

Trip-hop trio Monsta enters at #74 with "Holdin' On".

The final debut is by a vocal group who's had their fair share of top debuts in their career, Steps. The three women and two men who make up the act had 15 consecutive top-10 hits, all of their charting singles except for their debut "5,6,7,8" (which made it to #14). Two of them, "Stomp" and the double-sided single "Heartbeat"/"Tragedy" (the latter a cover of the BeeGees tune), went to #1 in England. The were super cheesy, and they were huge. They broke up in 2001 (well, two of them scuttled for a short-lived career), and they recently reunited for a series of concerts and a documentary of their recent life. With all that, it's surprising to see "Light Up The World" coming in just at #82, but maybe the single wasn't in wide release yet. We'll see (it would help if they had a proper video)..

That does it for tonight....Thanks for stopping by, stay safe, and I'll be back tomorrow with another Song of the Day, candletime, Part two of this week's "Album Sweep", and the "Robbed Hit" of the week. Cheers!
