twostepcub's New Music Roundup 1/7/23...

Welcome to 2023, folks, and it's time for me to spotlight my favorites of the songs reaching the various singles charts on Billboard magazine in America, and the Official British Singles Chart in the UK. The post-holiday week is the slowest one of all, but there are some tracks I think you should check out...

"Another Love" - Tom Odell
from the album Long Way Down (2013)
Billboard Adult Top-40 Airplay debut: #40

This week's charts reflect the period between Christmas and New Year's Day, and holiday music dominates again with little being released. This allows some left-field successes to occur, including this ballad from back in 2012 that has been revived thanks to the TikTok app which people are using the song to soundtrack their clips. I loved this song back then, with its stark emotional immediacy, and it rings just as true now without seeming dated. It was a top ten hit in the UK back then for English singer/songwriter Odell, and I'm glad it's getting a second chance here in the States.

from the album Bright Blues (2023)
Billboard Adult Album Alternative (Triple-A) Rock Airplay debut: #34

Indie-pop band Ripe color their angsty lyrics with brighter musical tones in their second single from their upcoming debut album. I would play this along with the funkier songs from the 1975...

from the album Some Of Us Are Brave (2022)
Triple-A Rock Airplay debut: #39

Alt-soul singer Ponder delivers a trippy and echoed excursion with great vocals that will please fans of Yola and Joy Oladukun in her earthiness.

from the album God Save The Animals (2022)
Triple-A Rock Airplay debut: #40

On the other side of the hazy indie-rock field is Havertown, Pennsylvania's Alex Giannascoli with this short tone poem that doesn't make too much sense lyrically but mesmerizes in its circular swirl of sound. In return Alex scores his first radio hit.

Billboard Dance Airplay debut: #26

Englund's career reminds me of Kristine W, who focused on club music - accessible club music but club music not aiming for the radio - to the point that if Billboard's Dance Club Play chart was back in action Anabel would be a big force there. This smooth and classy neo-house track is a cool night-time driving bop for your car playlist.

Dance Airplay debut: #36

Another good addition for the car is this fluffy neo-disco banger from the American DJ.

from the single (2022)
Dance Airplay debut: #37

DJ/producer Justin Blau returns with this short and sweet treatise on lust over emotion with this one the sports a decent backing track.

Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs debut: #50

German tropical house vet Jaehn takes a turn towards Lithuanian house mixed with Avicii-style acousticism with this jam that brings back Ray Dalton who blew me away on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' "Can't Hold Us" from back in the day.
