twostepcub's New Albums Roundup 1/22/23...

It's time for my weekly new albums roundup, where I take a look at the big albums on this week's American and British albums charts, along with my choices of the new records I think you should check out. To catch up on this week's singles round, you can click here.

It's another slow winter week, with only one album making its debut on the Billboard 200 sales tally, and it's yet another tepid rap release...

Billboard 200 debut: #9
Choice cut: "Just Like Me"

Youngboy's flood of banal releases make me fleetingly long for a Drake record. And that's saying something. The frequently-incarcerated Kanye apologist released his first "album" on Motown (I'm still cloudy on the difference between his albums and mixtapes, but whatevs), and its the same nasal sing-song he's been doing for the whole time. If anything, "Just Like Me"'s production is tight, but otherwise this is a total pass, only here from streaming playlist placement, and will fade to oblivion quickly

Iggy Pop's Every Loser, which I featured on last week's New Albums Roundup, places on the Billboard Top Current Albums Sales chart at #7, and it's definitely worth checking out, especially "Strung Out Johnny"...

Current Albums Sales debut: #61
Choice Cut: "Imperialism"

The veteran anarchist punk band from PA is back with a fiery collection of fist-pumping anthems featuring a bunch of guests that augment instead of detract. "Imperialism" came at the right time in the forced rise of King Charles.

Current Albums Sales debut: #66
Choice cut: "Mississippi Goddam (Live At Carnegie Hall, 1964)"

This 2021 collection from the jazz vocal legend makes the sales chart thanks to a red vinyl pressing, which includes this live humdinger of a trashing of racism in the south from her live show in Carnegie Hall; if you're streaming, you'll be treated to a 26-track look back including remixed versions of her songs from the likes of Hot Chip, Sofi Tukker, and Joel Corry.

Current Albums Sales debut: #92
Choice cut: "I Burned LA Down"

After recording scattershot singles and EPs, Miley Cyrus' sister slips in an indie-folk record that I love way more than I anticipated. Thoughtful and beautiful reflections on relationships and addiction including this song that equates the wildfires in California to her smoldering breakup.

Current Albums Sales debut: #96
Choice cut: "Sunburn"

The indie-electronica duo of Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn deliver a fourth album of quirky synth gem, anchored by this bass-heavy nerd bop.

Choice cut: "Skylight"

British songstress that went "viral" a decade ago with her cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "The Power Of Love" returns with a soft-rock throwback that's started off by the nicest use of birds since Minnie Riperton's "Lovin' You".
