Songoftheday 1/16/23 - Hey pretty mama, how you doing? Said I'm just in town for the weekend...
"Feelin' On Yo Booty" - R. Kelly
from the album TP-2.com (2000)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #36 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 3
Today's song comes from R. Kelly, who in the beginning of the decade was riding high as not only one of the biggest stars of R&B music, but producers as well (as opposed to now, where he's just a sex convict). His 2000 album TP-2.com had already spun off two top-40 crossover pop hits with the ballad "I Wish" as well as the party track with rapper Jay-Z "Fiesta". The single released between those two, "A Woman's Threat", rose to #35 on Billboard magazine's R&B Singles chart, but only "bubbled under" the pop Hot 100 at #115 in the spring of 2001. Also in the spring, "The Greatest Sex" placed at #79 on the R&B Singles chart. Another track from the album, "The Storm Is Over Now",
was released as a single internationally but not in the States, and
made the top ten in Belgium (#4W/#26F), Switzerland (#6), and Austria
(#10), and peaked at #18 in the United Kingdom. Also, the album cut "I Don't Mean It" got enough radio airplay to spend 17 weeks on Billboard magazine's R&B Singles chart with a high of #73. Since "Fiesta" was such a success, bringing Kelly back into the top ten, he continued the party at the time with "Feelin' On Yo Booty", which he wrote and produced. It's a pretty generic club lust track, but paced like a booty call slow jam with Asian musical notes in the background. In fact, there's really nothing notable about it at all, which makes the record come across more of a product than a song. Kelly oversings it as usual, and the production and vocals are professional enough, but considering his current status it's not giving enough of a reason to come back to it. The music video has a slew of star cameos proving his clout at the time...
"Feelin' On Yo Booty" became the third top-40 hit on Billboard's Hot 100 from the TP2-com album in October of 2001, while climbing to #9 on their R&B Singles chart. On the radio, the song peaked at #9 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart and #30 on the dance-oriented Rhythmic format. Internationally, the single just missed the top-40 in Germany (#43) and Belgium (#47). Kelly will be back to the series.
