Songoftheday 10/11/22 - I don't think you're ready for this jelly...

"Bootylicious" - Destiny's Child
from the album Survivor (2001)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12

Today's song comes from the female R&B trio Destiny's Child (v 2.5), whose third album Survivor had already spun off a big pop hit with the title track "Survivor" which made the runner-up spot on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 in the spring of 2001.  The follow-up single raised the tempo a little for a tribute to the posterior, "Bootylicious". Primarily written by lead singer Beyonce Knowles along with producer Rob "8Bit" Fusari and Falonte Moore, the track is dominated by the sample of Stevie Nicks' classic song from her Bella Donna album, "Edge Of Seventeen (Just Like A White Winged Dove)", which peaked at #11 on the Hot 100 back in 1982. which gave Nicks a writing credit as well. The record has Kelly Rowland singing two of the verses (a rarity at that time), with Beyonce taking over in the middle and during the chorus chant, "I don't think you're ready for this jelly", which admittedly is the most memorable part of the song. The lyrics are all bragging about their bodies, and its nice to have a turn (of course, the gheys loved this). Stevie Nicks gave her approval and appeared in the campy as f**k music video, and the trio found themselves on top again...

"Bootylicious" became Destiny's Child's fourth (and so far last) #1 pop hit on the Hot 100 in America in August of 2001. The song spent a week at #2 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart as well. On the radio, the track made it to #6 on the Mainstream Top-40 chart, #18 on the R&B Airplay list, and #10 at the dance-oriented Rhythmic format. The club remixes of "Bootylicious", done by Richard "Humpty" Vission, helped the track go to #13 on Billboard's Dance Club Play tally. Internationally, the single reached the top ten in the United Kingdom (#2), Canada (#4), Australia (#4), New Zealand (#4), the Netherlands (#5), Ireland (#5), Norway (#5), Belgium (#7W/#9F), and Sweden (#8). Both Destiny's Child and the album will return to the series.

an overhaul remix of "Bootylicious" was done for the urban and rhythmic radio formats, which featured rapper Missy Elliott. and redone by Elliott, Knowles, and DJ Rockwilder. A completely new video was even filmed for it. However the Nicks sample is completely gone, and R&B radio gave it a cooler reception..

To prove the pull of the show, Destiny's Child was still going on the Rosie O'Donnell Show to promote the single...

The trio performed "Bootylicious" at the Michael Jackson tribute concert in New York in 2001...

Here they are on a live concert special for the Disney Channel in 2002...

Most infamously, the group performed the song at the NBA Finals in 2001 between the LA Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers, WEARING LAKERS OUTFITS IN PHILLY, and getting rightfully booed to filth afterwards...

Up tomorrow: This Florida boyband is betting their entire bank.
