Robbed hit of the week 10/17/22 - Samantha Mumba's "Baby, Come On Over (This Is Our Night)"...

from the album Gotta Tell You (2000)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #49

This week's "robbed hit" comes from Irish pop singer Samantha Mumba, whose debut single "Gotta Tell You" not only was a huge European success but broke her big in America, reaching the runner-up spot on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 pop chart at the close of 2000. While overseas the singles "Body II Body" and "Always Come Back To Your Love" became big hits in Europe, topping the top five in the United Kingdom and Ireland, an attempt at an alternate single, "Don't Need You To (Tell Me I'm Pretty)", stiffed in the States. To try to turn things around, Mumba and Polydor released the dance-pop track "Baby Come Over (This Is My Night)" as the third American single. Written by co-producer Anders Bagge and the singer, the record is anchored by an interpolation of Kool & The Gang's "Ladies' Night" that is repeated in the chorus at the end. The lyrics have Mumba offering herself to a then-friendzoned guy, after reconsidering his assets. It's professionally executed if not totally memorable song that would have made mid-level Eurovision fodder, but the music video does highlight her dancing skills...

While "Baby, Come Over" rose to #16 on Billboard's Mainstream Top-40 radio chart, the song stopped just north of the halfway mark on the big chart, Billboard's Hot 100, in June of 2001. The remixes of the track helped it climb to #14 on their Dance Club Play chart as well. Internationally, the single made the top ten in Ireland (#2), Belgium (#2F), and the United Kingdom (#5), and was a top-40 hit in Australia at #35.
