Songoftheday 7/24/21 - Could you whisper in my ear? The things you wanna feel I'll give you anything to feel it coming...
"Slide" - Goo Goo Dolls
from the album Dizzy Up The Girl (1998)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 34
Today's song of the day comes from the Goo Goo Dolls, whose transformation from post-punkers to pop stars became complete in 1998 with their record-breaking stay at the top of the pop radio chart with "Iris", from the movie City Of Angels. That smash would also lead off their album Dizzy Up The Girl, which was released in September of that year. The second offering from the record would be "Slide", written by lead singer Johnny Rzeznik and produced by the band with Rob Cavallo. The song picks up in a young relationship where Rzeznik sings to his girlfriend May who had just had an abortion and was outcast by her parents and her church. Johnny offering her a life with no judgement, and to get married and run away from her troubles. It's a dark subject made brighter by the jangle-pop backdrop from guitarist Robby Takac and drummer Mike Malinin a la the Gin Blossoms, and radio and fans grabbed on to this as tightly as they did with "Iris"...
"Slide" became the Goo Goo Dolls' third top ten pop hit in February of 1999. The song spent two weeks at #1 on both the Alternative Rock and the older-skewing Adult Top-40 radio charts, and went to #4 on the Mainstream Rock format list in Billboard magazine. Internationally, the single took two weeks atop the Canadian Singles chart, and reached the top-40 in Iceland (#14), Australia (#29), and New Zealand (#36). It just missed the mark in the UK at #43. The Dolls will be back on the series soon.
