Songoftheday 1/30/21 - If you want it slowly don't knock on my door, 'cause I want it all and a little bit more...

"Breaking All The Rules" - She Moves
from the album Breaking All The Rules (1997)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #32 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10

Today's song of the day comes from the pop/dance trio She Moves, who came together as former cheerleader/dancers from the New York Knicks basketball team in the late 1990s. Diana Bologna, Carla Duren, and Danielle Flora hooked up with the Berman Brothers production team, who helmed their debut (and only) album which was released in the fall of 1997. The lead single was the title track, "Breaking All The Rules", written by Christian and Frank Berman with Jeff Coplan and Matt Dexter.  And does it ever sound like a blatant rewrite of the Spice Girls' "Wannabe". With it's branded "sassy girls" attitude lyrical content, albeit this time completely written by men, it even shared the same cadence as that #1 hit, but without the (rapped) bridge. It sounded fun and shiny, and enough people glommed on to it to make it a radio hit. The worst atrocity was the music video, which also cribbed the "breaking into a place they're not supposed to be" trope. This time it was a dance club, but somehow found the trio writing in bathroom stalls. Really. Not even high-end bathroom stalls. Like 1960s high school bathroom stalls. Ick.

"Breaking All The Rules" became She Moves' first and only top-40 pop hit in December of 1997. The single did better in Sweden, peaking at #11, while missing the top-40 in the Netherlands (#41) and Canada (#43). The Breaking All The Rules album didn't place on the Billboard 200 sales chart.

The group's second single was a remake of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's top ten country-pop ballad "It's Your Love". It topped out at #67 on Billboard magazine's pop Hot 100 chart. Meanwhile, another track from the album, "Just For Tonight", climbed to #23 in Sweden. The trio went their separate ways and have popped up on TV in various forms now and then.

Up tomorrow: These brothers are imminently expected.
