Songoftheday 3/4/16 - I know you think I'm no match for you baby, you like making it rough on me, don't you?
"Nobody's Fool (Theme from Caddyshack II)" - Kenny Loggins
from the albums Back To Avalon and Caddyshack II (Original Soundtrack) (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11
Today's song of the day comes from rock singer/songwriter Kenny Loggins, who had made more money off of the film industry than probably any other American pop musician in the 1980's. Five of his eleven top-40 pop hits came from soundtracks, including his almost top-10 hit from the Over The Top arm wrestling movie, "Meet Me Half Way". In 1988, his single was the third movie in a row he provided music from, and from a "sequel" movie where he also had a hit from the original. In 1980, the comedy Caddyshack was one of the biggest comedies of that year, with Saturday Night Live alums Chevy Chase and Bill Murray along with Rodney Dangerfield. Loggins' "I'm Alright" from that movie made it to #7 on the Hot 100. Eight years later, Caddyshack II was finally released, but Dangerfield had quit the movie, while Murray was replaced by Dan Akyroyd. I guess the most exciting part of the cinematic disaster was the single from Loggins, "Nobody's Fool". With a frenetic rhythm written by Kenny with Michael Towers, the song defied the failure of the film to put him back on pop radio...
"Nobody's Fool" became Kenny's fifth and final top-10 (as well as top-40) pop hit in September of 1988. The song also popped on to the Mainstream Rock radio chart at #30, as well as Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") chart at #42. Internationally, the single made it to #11 in Canada.
Loggins put out Back To Avalon, which had both "Meet Me Halfway" and "Nobody's Fool" on it, but two more singles missed the top-40. He started the 90's with the Leap Of Faith album, which was deceivingly popular, sending three singles into the top ten on the adult contemporary chart, with one of them, "Conviction of the Heart", being his most recent Hot 100 hit at #65. In 1996, yet another soundtrack contribution, "For The First Time" from One Fine Day, took him to #1 on the adult contemporary chart for the first time (see what I did there). His most recent appearance was in 2004 with "I Miss Us" (#18 Adult Contemporary).
