Songoftheday 3/17/16 - When you make love do you look in your mirror? Who do you think of, does he look like me?

"Love Bites" - Def Leppard
from the album Hysteria (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13

Today's song of the day comes from British pop-metal rock band Def Leppard, whose fourth album Hysteria, after a slow start, had built up favor with fans and radio, sending three songs into the top-40 pop chart in America with the top-20 "Animal", the top-10 title track, and then the #2 "Pour Some Sugar On Me" (arguably their best-loved hit). For their fifth single from the record (the lead release "Women" was a minor pop hit in the US) the group slowed down the pace a bit, but instead of the run-of-the-mill power ballad, they recorded the brooding treatise on romance "Love Bites". Written by the band with producer "Mutt" Lange (who would later use his writing/producing tricks for wife Shania Twain), the song wove around the snaky guitar licks and their spot-on harmonies, with a lyric about the perils of seeing a past love with someone new...

"Love Bites" became Def Leppard's sole #1 pop hit in the U.S. in October of 1988. The song also spent a week at #3 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock radio chart. Internationally, the single climbed to #2 in New Zealand, #6 in Canada, #7 in Ireland, #11 in their native Britain, and #21 in Australia.
