Songoftheday 1/21/16 - Love is like a bomb baby c'mon get it on, livin' like a lover with a radar phone...

"Pour Some Sugar On Me" - Def Leppard
from the album Hysteria (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 15

Today's song of the day comes from the pop/metal band Def Leppard, whose Hysteria album had slowly and surely was picking up business, after first single "Women" sort of stiffed in America down at #80, then follow-up "Animal" made the top-20, and lastly, the title track from the set cracked the top ten, the first time for the group. The fourth single from the record was "Pour Some Sugar On Me", written by the band with producer Robert "Mutt" Lange. With a booming march-like chorus that Lange would later use to great effect with wife Shania Twain, the song became their best-known hit. Although in my neck of the woods there was whispering about it being about the "bubble" of the crack pipe...

"Pour Some Sugar On Me" became Def Leppard's sixth top-40 pop hit, reaching the runner-up spot on the Hot 100 in July of 1988. Possibly hindered by its mainstream success, the single surprisingly did much more modestly on the American Mainstream Rock radio chart in Billboard, stopping at #25. Internationally, where it was released as the third single ahead of "Hysteria", the record made the top-10 in Ireland (#8), the top-20 in the UK (#18) and New Zealand (#16), and top-40 in Australia (#26).

The original music video for the single, quickly scrapped for the concert footage, featured the band playing in a demolished house...

...and here's the band performing the song live on the release of the record...

...and finally, Def Leppard live at Donington Castle in 2009...

Up tomorrow: A picture perfect trio demands a vow.
