Songoftheday 6/6/15 - Who would have thought that we would become lovers, as friends we were so so tight...
"Head To Toe" - Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam
from the album Spanish Fly (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14
Today's SOTD comes from the New York dance/freestyle trio Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, whose self-titled debut album with producers Full Force nabbed them a top-40 club classic with "I Wonder If I Take You Home" and a top-10 pop ballad with "All Cried Out". In 1987, they released their sophomore effort Spanish Fly, which was still written and produced by Full Force but without the extra artist credit on the record sleeve. With a sound that borrow more from Motown than the club, it pushed them further into the mainstream pop radio market, and the result came out of the box with the first single, "Head To Toe", which feels like an updated Supremes track...
"Head To Toe" climbed all the way to #1 on the American pop chart in June of 1987. The single also topped the R&B and Dance Club Play charts in Billboard as well. Internationally, while the song went to #1 in Canada, top-10 in New Zealand, and top-20 in Belgium and the Netherlands, it was a relative flop in the UK and Australia, not even making the top-75 in the former and #52 in the latter. Their album made the top 10 on the albums sales chart in the U.S., one of the biggest dance full-lengths of the decade.
