Pop Sweep: June 20, 2015...






I'm back from DC, and time to start playing "catch-up" with last week's 'chart sweeps', checking out the songs making their debut on the various singles charts in Billboard magazine. As usual, I'll recap the pop side of things, and then drop in on the latest on rock, R&B, country, and dance radio...

On the "big" chart, Billboard's Hot 100, which combines tallies of radio airplay in all formats, sales, and internet streaming (like YouTube or Spotify), Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth spend an eighth non-consecutive week at #1 with "See You Again"...

While "See You Again" comes from the movie Fast And Furious 7, the top newbie of the week at #47 is also from a movie, this time the upcoming Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a boxer. Eminem was originally set to star in the film, but in the end contributed the song, "Phenomenal", to the soundtrack. 34 of his previous singles have reached the top 40 on the Hot 100; five of those went all the way to the top, most recently with "The Monster" with Rihanna...

Courtesy of a YouTube video from last October that featured performance artist Marina Abramovic unexpectedly reuniting with former lover Ulay for the first time at her stint at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York City, indie-pop band How I Became The Bomb from Nashville land at #58 with "Ulay Oh"...


Country "crossover" artist Sam Hunt drops in at #85 with his "House Party". His single "Take Your Time", which is now getting pop radio airplay, also moves up two spots to #35...


Rapper A$AP Rocky comes in at #92 with "Everyday" with British producer Mark Ronson featuring a chorus sung by Latin soul star Miguel and rock royalty Rod Stewart, who sung the words originally on the single "In A Broken Dream" with the Australian band Python Lee Jackson, which hit #56 in the US and #3 in the UK in 1972...


"Horrorcore" rap biggie Tech N9ne gets more mainstream and makes the Hot 100 for the first time with "Hood Go Crazy" featuring 2 Chainz and B.o.B...


Country singer Dustin Lynch's second single from his Where It's At album, "Hell Of A Night", burns in at #99. The single is also at #19 on the country radio chart. It follows the title track which climbed to #42 here...


And now on to the pop radio format charts...

On the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, "See You Again" reigns for a fourth week...

Vine breakout star Shawn Mendes enters at #36 with "Stitches"...


Russo-German DJ and producer Zedd went to #11 with the first single from his True Colors album, "I Want You To Know", earlier this year. Now he arrives at #37 with "Beautiful Now" with vocals by Jon Bellion...


R&B singer Jeremih follows up his #5 hit "Don't Tell 'Em" with the song at #39, "Tonight Belongs To U!" featuring rapper Flo Rida...


Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, Walk The Moon's "Shut Up And Dance" holds at #1 for a fifth week...

Matchbox Twenty lead singer Rob Thomas returns up at #26 with his new single "Trust You". It serves as the first single from his upcoming third solo album The Great Unknown. He's been to #1 four times as a solo artist on this chart, most recently with "Someday" in 2010...


Irish singer-songwriter Hozier moves in at #33 with "Someone New". His breakthrough single "Take Me To Church" topped this chart back in February..


Sia dances in at #34 with her "Elastic Heart", the second hit from her excellent 1000 Forms Of Fear album. The first, "Chandelier", climbed to #10 here...


Jamaican reggae-pop single OMI takes his international smash "Cheerleader" to this list at #35...


American Authors, the indie-pop band who moved from Boston to New York City, topped the Adult pop chart last year with "Best Day In My Life". They return at #36 with their new single "Go Big Or Go Home"...



Alt-soul singer/songwriter Allen Stone comes in at #37 with "Freedom", my 'Pop Pick of the Week'...


 Australian indie-folk singer/songwriter Vance Joy is at #40 with his top-10 rock hit "Mess Is Mine". It follows "Riptide", which climbed to #7...


Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary, or "easy-listening" radio chart, Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" is on top for a fourteenth week...

The sole new entry at #29 is Maroon 5 with "This Summer's Gonna Hurt". Their last single, "Sugar", is still riding high at its high-point of #2...
