Today's SOTD come from the New Jersey hard rock band Bon Jovi, who had already scored a pair of #1 hits with "You Give Love A Bad Name" and "Livin' On A Prayer", along with a top-10 follow-up with "Wanted Dead Or Alive". While "Wanted" was climbing the chart, another cut from the album got enough airplay on pop radio to make the top-40 on that component list, even though it couldn't make the Hot 100 since it wasn't released as a physical single or a B-side in America. "Never Say Goodbye", probably their most loved power-ballad, was shrewdly kept from a 7" release to pump up sales of the album, something that would be done in high gear in the mid-to-late 80s...

"Never Say Goodbye" made the top-40 on the Billboard pop airplay chart in June of 1987. It was one of only two songs not released as a single to do so. The other? Another Bon Jovi song coming up later this year. The song did climb to #11 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks radio chart as well..

Internationally, "Never Say Goodbye" was released as a single in some countries, and went to #4 in Ireland, #21 in Britain, and was a top-40 hit in Australia, New Zealand, and Belgium.
