"Come As You Are" - Peter Wolf
from the album Come As You Are (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #15 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 9
Today's SOTD comes from Peter Wolf, whose first album after leaving the J. Geils Band, Lights Out, rewarded him with a pair of top-40 pop hits in 1984 with "I Need You Tonight" and the title track. Three years later, Wolf released his sophomore solo set, Come As You Are, and the title track and lead-off single, co-written with Tim Mayer, sported an undeniably infectious rhythm guitar riff at its core. And he sure got his cardio making the video...
"Come As You Are" became Peter's second top-20 pop hit in April of 1987. The record also went all the way to #1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock radio chart (his only rock #1 of his whole career), and even nicked the Dance Club Play list at #49.
Wolf's second single from the record, "Can't Get Started", managed to make it to #16 on the Rock chart, and #75 on the Hot 100. In 1990, his next record landed him his most recent minor pop hit, "99 Worlds" (#77), which also made the Rock radio top-10 (#9). A couple more albums followed with only a minor hit on each, before reuniting for a short time with the J. Geils Band. Wolf released his sixth solo album Sleepless in 2002, which has made Rolling Stones' list of top 500 albums of rock and roll history (and I have no idea how, and I own that album, probably one of 500 people who do). Most recently in 2010 his Midnight Souvenirs album made the top-50 album sales list.
